Did your phone get wet? Do this – and skip the rice

The first minutes after water damage matter. Here is what to do, what not to do, and what we can do in the workshop.

If your phone got wet, the first minutes matter. Liquid itself is rarely the biggest problem – it is the current running through a wet phone and the corrosion that follows.

Do this right away

  • Turn the phone off, and do not turn it on again to "test" it.
  • Do not charge it. Current through a wet logic board can cause a short circuit.
  • Take off the case and remove the SIM tray.
  • Wipe the outside with a soft cloth.
  • If it was salt water, soft drink or coffee, tell us – it makes corrosion worse.

Do not do this

  • No rice. Rice does not draw the water out of the phone, and dust can get into ports and speakers.
  • No hairdryer or hot radiator – the heat can damage the screen, battery and adhesive.
  • Do not shake it or blow into the port.

What we do in the workshop

We open the phone, find out where the liquid has reached and assess the corrosion. Often we clean the logic board with ultrasonic cleaning and dry it before we measure and test. You get an assessment and a price before we do any paid work.

Water damage typically takes 1–3 working days, because cleaning and testing must be thorough. See repairs and prices for your model.

Honest about water damage

Water damage is unpredictable. Faults can appear days or weeks later, and we cannot guarantee that every fault goes away. That is why we give no general warranty on water damage. If the phone is stable after our final test, we may in some cases give a limited functional warranty – only if it is written on your case.

Always back up. REPAIRO is an independent repair shop. Water resistance cannot be guaranteed after the phone has been opened.
